Coffee & the Heart

More good news for those who love their coffee.
Coffee has positive effects on the cardiovascular system, with 2-3 cups a day showing the most benefit. Even 1 cup is beneficial.

Daily coffee intake:
- lowers your chance of developing heart disease or stroke by 10-15%
- lowers your chance of dying for any reason!
- does not worsen current heart disease, or worsen arrhythmias
- enhances cognition
- inhibits fat absorption in the gut
- improves insulin sensitivity
- boosts metabolism

It is likely not just the caffeine in coffee that shows so many benefits, since coffee contains over 100 biologically active compounds.

The only time I would be cautious about coffee is if you are adrenally exhausted, burned out, and using coffee to keep going instead of changing your lifestyle and healing the burnout. Obviously it is going to be stimulating to the nervous system. However, even then, every situation is unique and many people simply do need to keep functioning at a high level while dealing with their burnout, and their morning coffee is not something I would recommend against if it is what keeps them functioning.

For most people, coffee can be enjoyed guilt free, knowing overall, it is of benefit and even decaf and instant coffee lead to overall lower mortality rates.
