10 Recommendations to Avoid Cancer

by the American Institute of Cancer Research

  1. Maintain a healthy weight

  2. Be physically active

  3. Eat a diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, fruits and legumes

  4. Limit consumption of take away, fast foods, processed foods high in fat, starch or sugar

  5. Limit consumption of red and processed meat

  6. Limit consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks

  7. Limit alcohol - even 1 drink a day increases risk of some cancers

  8. Meet your nutirtional needs through food, not supplement,s for cancer prevention

  9. For mothers, breastfeed your baby if you can, better for baby, reduces breast cancer risk for mum

  10. Cancer survivors should also follow all these recommendations as much as possible

Two other important factors are:

 1. Not smoking and avoiding exposure to 2nd hand tobacco smoke

2. Avoid excess sun, getting sunburned, to help prevent skin cancers - although getting adequate sun is also protective against cancer- so find the right balance.
