Coffee & Alzheimer's

Drinking more than 1 cup of coffee daily  may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s Disease, according to a 2021 long term Australian study. This study went for over 10 years and the adults in the study were an average age of almost 70 when it started, and of normal cognitive ability. Over the next 10 years they were tracked and those with higher coffee consumption had a lower chance of transitioning to Alzheimer’s status in that time. 

Taking into account that the maximum cups a day that provides benefit has not been establish, it is suggested that increasing from one to two cups of coffee daily may provide up to 8% decrease in executive function decline over 18 months. 

A 2016 meta analysis of the evidence to date also found that drinking 1-2 cups of coffee a day is associated with a lower incidence of cognitive disorders including Alzheimer’s, all cause demetia and cognitive decline. 

I always recommend coffee be taken after breakfast/ food, to limit the impact of increased metabolic rate on the adrenals and stress hormones. When there is fuel in the tank, so to speak, it is much less likely to cause the jitters or other stress symptoms. I do not recommend coffee on an empty stomach.
